Cooper was great in this, even outshining the unspeakably great Walter Brennan, who didn't pick up 3 Oscars for being dull (although of course it was Cooper's picture). This is one of those movies that teaches modern viewers why Cooper was one of the most durable leading men ever, a huge box office draw right up until his death with a career on top spanning over 30 years. Interestingly, he never worked with his principal rival, John Wayne.
