Visit - BritishAikido Blog -
Henry Ellis relates the origins of British Aikido from 1955 - Henry Ellis & Derek Eastman two direct students of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei have created a slide-show of photos with some narration. Ellis & Eastman sadly are now the last two pioneers of that wonderful era of Budo - Aikido in particular during the 1950s'...This was a time when dan grades in any martial art were rare - a time before you could print your own grading certificate off the internet or download from the BAB for £10 - A time before Kellogs put dan grades and Shihan titles in their boxes - It was a time to value.

  • how wonderful to see many images from Les' old albums together with so many memories, thank you Henry

  • @Tendai1953

I am privileged to be in contact with many surviving direct - genuine - students of Abbe Sensei ( thankfully no friends of Abbe Sensei :-)

I am also grateful for the material and photos that I receive such as from your good-self....

    Take care

  • The reason I have not mentioned Mr ``Ian ` Jim ` Williams `` of Bargoed South Wales ?? Is simply - I have never heard of him ??

    Henry Ellis

  • @Aikitrad Well I suggest you research your own research then!!! Unless of course there is a reason that you have not included him.He started with Haydn Foster.

  • @sherman4970

Firstly – I am not working from research - my knowledge & experiences are personal experiences. I was one of the first of 5 Aikido dan grades in the UK.

I repeat !! the reason I do not mention Mr Ian Williams "" he was not part of the origins """ ..no ulterior motive - I have no knowledge of him..........

May I remind you of the title of this video """" British Aikido Origins from 1955 """"

  • How exactly have you proved him a liar and in what respect??

Mr Williams was a founder member of WHAT??

All Aikido in the UK came from the Hut Dojo.

The ONLY Yudansha that were asked to meet the Doshu were:

    Ellis Sensei

    Foster Sensei

    Easrwood Sensei

and their grades are registered in the Aikikai Hombu in Japan and signed by the Doshu himself.

Is your MrWilliams grade registered there?

It's you are the one who is in denial about reality and you mistake "grovelling" for respect and the truth.

  • If you have the audacity to question Elli Sensei's knowledge of Aikido then you display your ignorance.Furthermore you insult a man who was a pupil of Abbe Sensei,Chiba Sensei,Nakazono Sensei and Norro Sensei.A man honoured by the Doshu(on his visit to Cardiff) and presented with a certificate by him.A man whose Aikido Grades are registered and acknowledged by the Aikikai HQ in Japan. How dare you take such a foolish stance??Did Your Mr Williams meet the Doshu in Cardiff during his visit?

  • What about Ian "JIM " Williams of Bargoed in South Wales???? He hasnt had a mention and is very much still alive...
