A groundbreaking ceremony officially launched construction of space shuttle Atlantis' future home at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

For real people. The shuttle did more than expected. You could not have asked for more. It lasted far longer than expected. It cost the majority of NASA's budget to keep it going. Which meant it had to go( along with the structural problems). By doing that, they freed up much more money to be put into other deep space missions. Low earth orbit is sooooo 20th century.

@usaeagle1776 Not with the wear and tear they have. the Engines are full of Microcracks and who knows how much more unseen. They went WAY beyond their expected life time. They just are not safe any more.
Although it is sad they did not continue with a Winged returnable craft. Someone will though.

@usaeagle1776 Its time to move on we need to go deeper into space than low earth orbit the SLS and Orion will take us further than ever before...we just need the funding.

@usaeagle1776 wrong the shuttle program was shutdown by Bush and CAIB the shuttle had to go life was at risk and it fulfilled the goals that Reagan gave it.
