The first AIDS cases were reported 30 years ago, and one of the first physicians to treat AIDS patients was Alexandra Levine, M.D., M.A.C.P. Dr. Levine now serves as chief medical officer of City of Hope and deputy director for clinical programs of its Comprehensive Cancer Center. In recognition of World AIDS Day, Dr. Levine speaks about the epidemic and its enormous impact. She remembers what is was like thirty years ago to suddenly encounter a dramatic medical mystery, describes the remarkable medical and scientific progress that has been made in the past three decades, and explains how AIDS has changed medicine -- and the world.
