One reason for poverty in the middle east is European Colonialism. THe British and French drew the national boarders conquering and dividing the Islamic caliphate and created Saudi arabia, Oman, yemen and so on. The reason: to better control populations once conquered and easier for exploitation of resources. National boarders devastated Yemens economy since its a desert and has no resources to export.
