@StarlingKnight See, I love to hear about other countries' traditions. I don't really celebrate Shrove Tuesday (although I do take part in Carnival), but apparently the traditional food is pancakes and waffles. Yummy!
The Three Kings (or Three Wise Men if you're not Catholic) bread is a sweet bread. You can also add almond paste to the dough, but that's rather heavy, so I prefer it without.
@StarlingKnight I'm not Spanish, but I'm still going to eat a Three Kings bread (with the almond or bean inside) and bacon pancakes with syrup! Merry Epiphany!;)
@StarlingKnight According to the Bible that would be "gold, frankincense and myrrh" (in Dutch "goud, wierook, mirre"). I know the word incense, but I've never heard of FRANKincense. Apparently it's incense made from resin from the Bowellia tree.
This 3 Wise Men tradition is originally from Spain and immigrants have brought it into all nowadays spanish talking countries in Mid- and South America.
I didn't know what epiphany is in english, in my language it's "loppiainen". Now I know it's called epiphany :)
The authentical Christmas/Yule/Midwinter Festival traditions are interesting. Too bad kids these days know only the HO HO HOing chub CocaCola Santa in many countries...
@StarlingKnight Yeah, I know, they also have that tradition in Spain, I believe. Catholics in Holland also celebrate Epiphany on Januray 6th, but not the way they do. I like it, people shouldn't give in to the American commercial Santa Claus, they should cherish their own precious traditions!
Three Wise Men comes around 5th of January and bring presents and candy to kids, like they brought gold, mirram and spices to Baby Jesus two millennia ago :)
It's funny that both, russian and spanish/latin countries celebrate Christmas after New Year but with different reasons.

@oonai5000;
Heh, we have this traditional sweet bun with almond paste filling that is tied to the Shrove Tuesday before the great Lent starts in February :)
Maybe 3 Wise Men bread is sour baking, not sweet but the filling is rather close.

In Latin American tradition there is no Santa.
