'What went wrong with the LHC in september 2008, and the status of repairs.
Interviews with Sergio Bertolucci, CERN Research Director, Mike Lamont, LHC Operations Leader, Lucio Rossi, Head of the LHC Magnets group, Francesco Bertinelli, LHC Engineer, reconstruction leader'
Omg they are testing the machine without any care if the machine destroy in 20000 millons pieces who care ? we can repair again, Ok now when the machine destroy the world Ok no problem we r not alive for afront the problems

It's wrong that the LHC shutdown for CHRISTmas. Part of the LHC's mission is to explore the big bang and possibly destroy the idea of God I'd hope. It just wasn't good taste nor fitting to shutdown a potentially God ending machine in the name of Christ. I hope it's able to sucessfully start back up again in those very cold temperatures or Christians might claim it's a act of God to stop it.

Re; last 3 comments from Swinkyuk & Esurname, the answer is yes.
Re; is it a waste of money? Yes.
If they want to know the meaning of life they should go ask the Dali Lama and save a few trillion dollars :)

Maybe those clever scientists should have measured the resistance of the cable BEFORE they switched it on?

Problem; if the protons have antiparallel spin, they will pass right through each other, with NO INTERACTION AT ALL.
Bummer.

Trying to make a Big Bang out of something that is made of "Weak" Material? Compared to the Big Bang, Diamond is a weak piece of paper.
I hope the machine gets fixed so I can roast some marshmellows with it.

Yup . A lower step in impedance from the source would cause a reflected wave inverted from the source wave(i.e in extreme a short circuit) this would bounce back adding to the next source pulse. A higher step would cause a reflected pulse in phase with the source. Consequently any change in impedance even a small amount of connector resistance(given the high currents) will cause multiple reflections in the loop..they could decouple (filter) these out close to each connector.

My guess is they would use a much lower A/C current to test the charcteristics of the whole ring. If a high frequency was used you should see a reflected wave back from any step in impedence. All guess work on my part of course. Interesting stuff even BEFORE the science starts! :-)

I meant the connection with the most resistance will blow first, but i take your "within tollerance" point. They would have to pass the huge currents through each connection to measure the volt drop across the junction.. If pulsed dc is used i wonder if a "back emf "is produced causing a momentary higher voltage across the junction thus exceding its rating.? I really hope this works this time..cant wait for the results..
