Cyprus leaders consider reunification of the island -25Jul08

Three decades of divide are taking a toll on rival communities in Cyprus - but that looks set to change.

Greek and Turkish leaders are to meet on September 3 to begin negotiations on the reunification of the island.

The historic talks would end a four-year deadlock between the communities following the rejection of a UN-brokered deal by the Greek Cypriots.

The ethnic divide has gripped the island for 34-years.

For one community, these talks hold particular significance.

Al Jazeera's Hamish MacDonald reports from the Karpaz region, on the tip of northern Cyprus, to meet the last remaining Greek community under Turkish control.

I am Arab and i side with the Greeks this is unfare Cyprus is a beautiful Island and the Greeks have always been are freinds and partners.

Real peace in Cyprus will come when ALL Cypriots together find peace and run their own country unified.

i really think the long live EOKA is not a good idea, racism today is not a good light and if you read what the EOKA was doing it was racist.

Mainland turkish settlers are illigal imigrants on the island i agree there are true turkish cypriots who have right to be in cyprus and they should have there homes back as they are cypriot nationality turkish need to go back to there own country and work hard to make turkey a better place stop wasting everyones time and life

wow irland is split under a different way that was because england invaded irland and irland whated there land back so england said many years later ok have it back it is yours after all but irish ppl wanted to stay under british goverment, hence england said all them to live under british rule to north all them for irlands rule to the south very very different to cyprus, now in todays day it is united country with england but with its own governement making up the UK

@dervscool: Greeks were in Cyprus during anthiquity (1000 years before turks came in this region from central Asia). Anthic ruins are the proofs of their existence. The surname of Cyprus is Aphrodite's island (Aphrodite a anthic greek god). The problem are more dificult. 2004 was a chance but not equal for greeks cypriots. Read history outside of greek and turkish history because we (greeks and turks) have not an objective view.

why dont the greeks stop complaining it was never a greek island you had your chance to unite 2004 most of the greeks that are complaining are not even from cyprus its the same with the bloody turks causing problems for the cypriots yes the turks came to help the cypriots but time now to hand over to the cypriots im sick of going to cyprus and seeing it ruined by the turkish mainlanders..

mehmet ali talat is a terrorist and a criminal. how can northern cyprus be turkish its an island remember. a greek country with turkish IMMIGRANTS. no country in the world aknowledges northern cyprus for a reason. the turks invaded cyprus and now they should go home to their own country. long live EOKA
