Hmmm. We don't elect competent business people because we wouldn't pay them enough as politicians.  They can make more leading a successful business. It is like that old saying: "those that can do, those that can't teach". If a politician could make a fortune some place else, they would.

@popparoc46 I take serious issue with that "those who can't teach" stuff because I know for a fact that it's BS. It also helps feed the kind of mindset that keeps teachers at a lower salary than they deserve. But, yeah it's a shame that more sharp minds aren't motivated to even go the public servant route, financial incentives being what they are. Not a total impossibility, however, thanks to people like Mitt Romney and (reaching waaaaaay back here) Ross Perot.

So who knows.

The state of the American political system alarms me. In many ways, it's not more dysfunctional than anywhere else, but there's more at stake for everyone when American domestic politics goes wrong.
