Canon T1i night tests using a Nikon lens to EOS adapter ring and an old 50mm f1.8 Nikkor AI lens. I started with the lens at max aperture but it looked a little brighter than the dark mood I had in mind so much of the night shots were at f2.8 or so.

The old Nikkor lens is strictly manual and the camera cannot control anything on it. So the aperture is set by turning the aperture ring (just like in the "good ole days" and focus is also manual. The camera then sets shutter and ISO. With Canon EF and EF-S lenses the only manual control possible is to lock exposure and then adjust exposure bias 2 stops under and 2 over.

What I will use this for is shallow DOF with selective focus and for low light work to supplement my Canon HF100's.

  • Better than what I used on this would be the Canon T2i which is dropping in price since the T3i is about to hit the market. $769 seems to be the price at both Amazon.com and B&H. Add the EF 50mm f1.8 at about $120 (looks like Canon lenses just took a bit of a price jump!) and you can do what I did in this video. Canon's current affordable offerings have full manual control over aperture, shutter, and ISO in video mode.

  • FWIW I sold the T1i shortly after Canon came out with the 7D. I now shoot this type of night video with either a 7D or T2i and the primary lens is a Canon EF 28mm f1.8 which gives a "normal" perspective and has excellent low light performance.

  • With the Nikkor lens I was using changing the aperture is as simple as turning the aperture ring. Shutter control is then somewhat possible using ND filters. ISO remains on AUTO no matter what.

The T2i has full manual in video mode if you have selected this in a menu. You can set desired aperture and shutter, then work the ISO to give desired exposure effect.

  • awesome!!
