Baila was brought to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Wally Bastiansz adapted the 6/8 rythm into Sinhalese songs and created Sinhala Baila genre in the 1960s. Maxwell Mendis of Mendis Foursome group was a popular Baila singer in the 70s. This track is one of Maxwell's many popular Baila hits.

  • Thanks for all the trouble taken to give us the original renditions of these good old songs of a bygone era when everybody did whatever one did with loads of commitment and the bottom line was not only money.

  • @greasedslip

Your'revery welcome and thanks for the appreciation!!

  • Dear Jude,

Nice to see good old Maxwell in this original track.

It makes so much better to listen to these original oldies in their untarnished full flavour.

Thanks for uploading the original once more. Keep up the good work.

    regards

    Vidhura

  • Hello Vidhura,

Thanks for the kind comment. Yes, the first version always seem to register with listeners better than later versions.

    Rgds,

    Jude

  • Agree with you Anil. Even I thought this was Maxwell's original. Have not heard MS's version. However, I remember Gahanu Mokada Me Tharam Baya. They are classic Baila and those were the days !!

You are correct about the other two songs too. Even Desmond's Yaman Bando is a Wally's original. It appears that many Baila songs that others sing nowadays are Wally's originals for which they never give credit whatsoever, which is sad !!

    Thanks for the comment !!

    Rgds,

    Jude

  • thanks HF for giving the deserved credit for this song to MS (I have heard that "Mama bohoma baya wuna" & "Apita genu mokada me tharam baya" were the two hist of MS in the 50's.

Maxwel also sang songs of Wally Bastian like "Babi achchi" & "Ratak watinawa". Soem fans think that these are original Maxwel songs!

  • Thanks. I did have Bola kadalai somewhere, but cannot locate it.

  • This song was on the A side with "Bola Kadalai"(originally by A. J. Kareem from Sirisena Wimalaweera's 1954 movie Saradiel); the b-side contained "Atheetha Adare" and a cover of Wally Bastiansz' "Bambara".

  • Thanks for the lovely comment. I will try to find Mage Surathal. I know I have it somewhere, but just can't locate it.

  • Thanks for the comment and information. This one is from the Sooriya LP. What are the other songs on the EP ?
