The 2011 Small Business Person of the Year Award goes to John Lavrakas, President of Advanced Research Corporation.
The SBA created the award as part of National Small Business Week an initiative President John F. Kennedy founded in 1963 to recognize the contributions that small businesses make to the nation's economy. The Small Business Person of the Year is selected by a panel of judges and evaluated on the following criteria:

• Staying power
• Growth in employment
• Increase in sales/unit volume
• Innovation
• Response to adversity
• Evidence of contributions to his/her community

John Lavrakas began his company 17 years ago in Colorado Springs with the singular focus of Global Positioning System consulting. In 2006, he moved to Newport, Oregon and enlarged his company's vision to include business opportunities on the coast. His business developed expertise in the areas of marine studies and applications, including wave energy technology, ocean observation and fishery database development. John started as a one-man consulting firm, but under the guidance of Oregon Coast Community Colleges' Small Business Development Center, he widened his goals to build his business into a multi-employee operation offering a larger variety of services to clients. John's business has steadily grown in net worth because he identified an emerging trend and started offering high-tech business in an area that was a non-high-tech region.

Using his experience in service to his community, John actively promoted the Government Contract Assistance Program (GCAP) in Lincoln County. He headed up a task force to provide contractor training for local businesses in order to help them be successful in acquiring accounts from the upcoming National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration facilities re-location. John is remarkable in using his expertise in reaching out to others to pool resources for improving the economy of Lincoln County.

Here is what John has to say about Advanced Research Corporation.
