Frank Nitti was another one of Al Capone's top associates and ran Big Al's smuggling and liquor distributing operation. He went to prison with Capone in 1932 but was released after eighteen months. Following his parole he became the head of the old Capone mob. It was a figurehead position for the most part with mobsters like Paul Ricca and Tony Accardo were the real power in the organization.

He served as boss until the early forties when he was indited along with a number of other Chicago gangsters in a Hollywood extortion plot. Since it Nitti's scheme that went bad and one of his close associates that was the informant it was decided that Nitti would do time. Frank Nitti was very claustrophobic.

The day before he was supposed to testify before the grand jury he had breakfast with his wife. Then after she left for church Frank drank heavily loaded a pistol in his pocket and went for a walk. He walked along some railroad tracks for awhile and then, shortly after being passed by a train, pulled out his pistol and shot himself.
