Peak Moment 198: Having learned "How Much Food Can I Grow Around My House?" (Peak Moment 87), Judy Alexander kept right on going. As chair of the Local 2020 Food Resiliency Action Group in Port Townsend, WA, she helped initiate 25 community gardens in her county within four years. Sitting in her own neighborhood's garden, she talks about the power of cooperative gardens compared with individual plots. There's something for people of all ages and skills to do (even non-gardeners), while enjoying learning from one another, and building closer neighbors and a more secure community.

  • no devaes?

  • @mywootgarden, I hope to tape the Dervaes in future. Theirs is not a community garden, but what can be done in an individual suburban plot.

  • the intro is so 90s!

  • @dbjaqy1, yup, you're absolutely right! But Peak Moment isn't about keeping up with trends and style, as it is about what that can be sustained for the long run. Style is central to consumer culture, which uses advertising to fabricate and magnify our desires for what's different and new, rather than what's long-lasting and classic. Consumer culture is used to increase corporate powers. Even worse, it uses up more of the planet even faster.

  • I'm gushing happy for you folks. You are living a real village life, with children playing at work and old folks doing what they can to feel useful. Gardening is one of the greatest pleasures of my life, and I'm not one of the best around. I learn things like how to make use of all the extra food I've grown, to accepting the garden has failed and what to do next. We had a drought this year and are hoping to grow turnips this winter, not my favorite. Thanks from all us at Indian Country Farms.

  • Guys, I just translated this into Spanish for a reader who just asked.

Is there a way to translate this channel into Spanish?

  • @sole735

  • I love what she says about leadership! Cheers Peak Moment and Judy!
