Yes, you talk sense here! They never sited themselves musicians either. They did what they did out of pure experimentation, curiosity, enthusiasm and dissatisfaction with the world/music that was around when they first started. And I'm afraid to say that nothing much has changed drastically since. A lot of things have just worsened. There's still lots to be said about that question.
