Yea in halo CE when a vehicle hitted a living object at almost any speed it dyed.
in Halo 2 Splatters where not so common because i you jumped in time you will survive withought shields.
and
In halo 3 well...a cone is a bigger threat than a guy with a rocket launcher and/or needler.
