That first gimp in the beginning, can somebody tell me if there was some strategy or advantage to grabbing with the monkey flip and then just waiting it out, or would Diddy have been better off jumping out of the monkey flip?

he wouldn't have gotten the footstooljump [which is ultimately what killed M2K] if he jumped out of it

no clue, haven't really seen other diddy players crazy enough to do that but at the same time, this tactic seems INCREDIBLY situational
