Letterboxing occurs when the video is surrounded with black on all sides.

For non-HD videos there will be two vertical black pillars. This is okay.

When there are four pillars of black it is a waste of space (and can be annoying to some).

If you can't comprehend my incoherent explanation, it says not to letterbox in the youtube handbook (under the section of uploading.
