And here it is... the most comprehensive revamp of WCAU's news since 2000. New set, new graphics, new theme... and a leap to beautiful high definition. The look is once again top-notch... the set is once again leaps ahead of everyone else in the market.

The new look also marks WCAU's first all-new theme since 1997, by Gari Communications. It fits the look perfectly.

  • My only problems here are that the word "PHILADELPHIA" in the open is in Arial when it should be in DIN like the rest of the text (KNSD does this with "SAN DIEGO" too), and the echo with the V/O.

I like the EarthWatch open though (it's at 0:54).

  • The Arial font thing is on every O&O open aside from Los Angeles and I think San Fran. It's a minor quibble, because the rest of the look is quite nice.

As for the V/O echo, that's no longer a problem - they changed the voiceover guy a few months ago.

  • 1. WCAU, why is there no remnant at all of the theme you had for over 10 years??? At least you could have commissioned a custom version of the Gari music like WRC.

    2. The new set is too angular and square. You could get a nasty cut from just touching that desk.

    3. Curtains on the HD feed. You've had all this time to prepare for HD, but your footage is not in HD yet? Unnacceptable.

    4. Not of the echo or sfx in the open.

    Newer is not always better...

  • 1.) I would not be surprised if they intended to use the old theme - promos were airing with the old theme - but they made a late decision to change. For what it's worth, I quite like the new stuff.

2.) That's what I like - there's angles where you don't expect it to be, giving it a very modern look.

3.) There's a bunch of things that they, apparently, can't do in HD yet due to NBC budget issues.

4.) The echo was only present here - probably an audio issue.

  • I had it wrong; I went and watched KXAS's open, and "DALLAS" and "FORT WORTH" are in the font used as CBS's current wordmark, not DIN. KNBC also uses that font for "LOS ANGELES", but KNTV uses DIN for its conglomeration of locations.

  • ever since nbc bought this station....they always have had the nicer of things

  • yea kinda reminds yea of the action news days

  • yea annoying...but something every station will use eventually along with the hi def switch...well all get used to it

  • omg it looks to beautiful you cna tell the graphics there using is the NBC O&O Generation 2

  • Seeing the Philly skyline in the background kinda brings back memories of the set used in the station's CBS days back in the 1980s.

  • Of course NBC 10s set is nicer than everyone else's. When your the last one to upgrade you have the advantage of knowing the competition and being able to build a set better than them. If they were the first to go HD chances are their set wouldn't be as nice.

  • I. The theme could go into the trash, It doesn't matter for me. There a mainstays that last for a REALLY long time. Like, ACTION NEWS long.

II. 3 NEWS in New Zealand has a similar set, believe or not. It's on YouTube, search for it.

III. They'll get an update on the Cameras eventually...Budget cuts in O&O affiliates really hurt. KTSM, anyone?

IV. Echos are sometimes useful...KYTX just abuses it with their "sexual predator" V/O...here, I think if it stays, put it to good use.

    Give it a month.
