grey (ani difranco cover)

Been wanting to do an Ani song for a while. Um, not a sing-a-long anyway... It was a kind of grey day so this one sort of felt right. My friend Andrew in Portland once told me how much he appreciated this song and then we went on to talk for a while about how Sundays (even though it's Saturday right now) can carry a sort of weight and dreariness... This song always reminds me of that conversation. Which, because of the friendship it represents, fills me with a kind of ironic tranquility. Perhaps it's just the fact that misery loves company; but I think the song has a definite--if not bizarre--celebratory tone for the moments when we find ourselves for whatever reason feeling alone or uncertain. I think of those moments as a rite of passage: you go through them to truly appreciate the good moments. Like in Michael Cunningham's novel, The Hours, when Virginia Woolf is trying to decide what crisis to design for a climax, she whispers, "...The poet will die so that the others may better appreciate life..." (or something like that)...
