In March 1998 the Mayor of New York City,
Rudolph Giuliani, imposed an unconstitutional permit system against artists selling art in NYC Parks.
It was "pay-back" for a Federal Lawsuit that the
ARTIST Group
(Artists, Response,To Illegal,State,Tactics)
had won six months earlier
[Lederman/Bery et al v.Giuliani/ City Of New York et al]
It triggered a 65 a long protest in front of the Metropolitan Museum Of Art and another Federal Lawsuit [Lederman/Bach et al v.Giuliani/NYC et al]; challenging Giuliani's "artist arrest policy" in NYC Parks.
The protest was marked with dozens of arrests,hundreds of summonses
along with hundreds illegal art confiscations.
This video documents the events that unfolded from April 1st until May 1st.
This is 3 of 3 videos for this the "MET Protest" of 1998.
[ Note: we eventually also won this Federal Lawsuit , overturning yet another unconstitutional Permit System against NYC Artists. Giuliani did appeal the case, but the decision was upheld, unanimously by the 2ND Circuit Federal Court of Appeals in 2003 ]

I was surrounded by a ten piece undercover swat team on west broadway in soho on fathers day ! They took away all my pictures and I had to face the judge. What a waiste of hard working artists and talent the people should pay us to uplift neighborhoods instead were treated like terrorists! Good morning World !

Giuliani claimed he single handedly stopped crime in NY. That's bullshit. Crime went down 3% in NY and 10% nationwide. If he gets elected, the United States will become a police state.

Ubelievable! I had no Idea this was going on. I guess the crime is down in New York. For them to have this much time to harass Artists. While Drug Lords are selling drugs to children.Our tax dollars at work:-(
