Cleaning the fire on 25NC 3410 at Lukosi as a Botswana diesel arrives and passes us before heading to Zambia. We then follow as far as Victoria Falls. This was the first ever working of a South African class 25NC 4-8-4 in Zimbabwe, July 2001

  • Feel like...?

That is an interesting question...A hard one to answer.

Steam locomotives are inherently dirty, heavy and labor intensive "work".

I've never though worked on them for living.

They are though the most interesting and "visible" of all mechanical devices.

It is that visibility that is the drug that draws one to them.

To answer your question though, no two are alike some ride better (smoother) than others.

The 25NC is one of the best riders I've experienced

  • Hi,

I'm pushing the ash and clinker out of the ash pan. The hot coals are piling up on the Ties (Sleepers) below. I'm then just raking them out flat to cause them to cool faster before we left.

  • What does working with steam engines feel like?

  • Great job posting first generation steam operation. Is this cleaning the fire or dumping the ashpan? Looks like the rake action is down into the pan. Do the grates need to be cleaned from underneath?
