I agree wholeheartedly! Michigan sucks in so many ways. I can't wait to leave this worthless state. The reason we don't have bike lanes or decent mass transit is because the Big Three wants to keep us held hostage to cars only. Well, I've had it with that. As soon as I can afford it, I'm moving to Portland, OR. They are a bike-friendly city.
Until Americans run out of gasoline, they won't give up their love affair with their big gas guzzling air polluting cars -- therefore, they simply see the bicycle as a cute little child's toy and not as a good serious mode of transportation.
England sounds like a nice place, I always wanted to live there for a year or two.
TO answer the question about bike lanes, its all logistics, alot of the roads in michigan and other states have been built years ago. Florida on the other hand are just now starting to expand and build over new land, they have the opportunity to listen to the public and maybe that is why they have alot of road shoulders and bike lanes. There are some where I live. VA
We have bike lanes in Battle Creek, MI. There are a few areas where I disagree with their placement because the traffic lane result is extremely narrow, however, Battle Creek has really pushed the bike lane idea. By the way, I hope to see you at the Michigander this year, I'll be helping with radio communications.
Did you know that the Macomb Country (Michigan) Road Commission actually has a standing resolution AGAINST bike lanes!?!!!! I think the resolution stems from ignorance over the usefulness and increases safety of bike lanes. Bike lanes are safer than bike paths and sidewalks because of decrease curb cuts.
If we use the same Dark Dennis logic about bike lanes on snowmobiles, we will need to close all the snowmobile trails in the state first because they can only be used 3 months of the year.
Michigan doesn't suck. Every state has it's downfalls. I live in California and have visited MI over 50 times to visit friends and work. I can't think of another state that has as much to offer as MI. That is why they are shooting more and more movies there. Clint Eastwood loves it. Michigan needs to stop relying so much on the auto industry and more inviting for other industries.
I am just gonna ask how practical is it to have bike lanes in a place where it snows 11 months a year? And you say your in Florida? hmmmm. I don't remember bike lanes in Wisconsin, but i remember them in Arizona. I think if roads are clear of snow more than 6 months a year. you will see more bike lanes.
