Volkswagen Concept BlueSport. Volkswagen's latest concept car will reach 60 mph in 6.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 140 mph. With specs like that, most Americans would be surprised to learn that it also runs on diesel fuel and can return highway fuel economy of up to 50 miles per gallon. Developed for "maximum driving fun and minimal fuel consumption," the lightweight, 180-horsepower Concept BlueSport demonstrates how mean and green can be perfect partners. Combining the low-end torque of a 300-horsepower V6, a six-speed DSG transmission and 45:55 front:rear weight distribution, the compact, mid-engine, rear-drive roadster promises big fun. On the economy front, the BlueSport steals a couple tricks from the hybrid playbook, employing an automatic start-stop system and regenerative braking. In its quest to happily unite agility and frugality, it also foregoes a folding hardtop in favor of a lighter, manually operated cloth roof. • I am still puzzled that Americans are somewhat unused to diesel in standard cars. Diesel engines are nowadays superior in almost every aspect compared to gasoline

  • I saw this when I was at the NAIAS. When I found out it was mid-engine, diesel, and rear-wheel drive, I decided this was the car for me. All I ask from VW is this car with a manual transmission (no flappy paddle nonsense or automatic only deal), a good suspension, and a price around $26,000 (that last one might be a bit of a dream). Oh, and perhaps a better name. Bluesport? We can do better than that.

  • @Gnometower Yes, except for cost. For whatever reason diesel costs an extra dollar per gallon than gasoline. Which is stupid since diesel is a by-product of gasoline.

  • I have 3 diesel VWs. An 02 Jetta and 05 Passat and an 82 Rabbit. We make our own fuel and get great mileage. This sports car is the coolest by my book.

  • an even cheaper version of the porsche boxster, use some other ideas vw

  • If this beauty comes to Canada before my lease is over I'm totally going for it.

  • Since Porsche is part of the VW Group, I wonder why they not just putting a POrsche badge on this awesome car, call it the new "Porsche Boxster Blue" and sell it for twice the money... bet it'd work :D

  • "Why diesel you ask?" So it won't match the Porsche Boxster in performance for half the price.

  • TT is dead VW BlueSport was born

  • @Gnometower and they last 5 times longer

  • Nah, looks like the same roadster design the auto community has been making since the Miata.

  • im a gay dude and i like it !
