the second movement of "five ideas about the relation of sight and sound", performed in zürich. the idea behind "grainyfilm" is to play with the notion of what would happen if, the way paused video is still seen, sound were to continue to be heard when a tape or soundfile is paused. i was first exposed to the concept of "stopped-while-still-sounding" sound through composer-technologist nathan wolek in chicago. other inspirations include curtis roads ("microsound") and the massed guitars of rhys chatham. all sounds and pictures are generated and processed live. six screens, seven channels. yeah.
