Jo Schornikow and Keith Zarriello, in their derelict clothes, bring their raw New York City soul to Los Angeles. Without an introduction, Jo Yamahas's Electone Organ creeps into Echo Curio like fog filling city streets of gloom and melancholy. The conversation dwindles into absolute silence. All is still. Keith and Jo begin to play "The Road" as they croon "I'm gone like yesterday" within the chorus. Keiths raspy, strong voice puts the audience's hands on the wheel and guides them on a lost, lonely road - driving into infinite sadness, wondering if the journey will ever end. Keith then awakens the crowd and announces, "It's time for some rock n' roll." The second song of the set brings out Keith's vocals, having some resemblance to Billy Joel's soulful, slightly guttural tones. Jo provides the pulse with her organ while the guess drummer lays the foundation with a steady kick drum beat. Keith then sprinkles a simple guitar melody and begins to softly sing about a difficult love situation. The tune gradually becomes more upbeat, revealing splashes of Talking Heads rhythms and David Burns jittery vocal projections, and concludes with a powerful, but yet punkish ending with Keith belting out Oh, oh, oh, oh while heavily down stroking his guitar. The set ends with Keith exuding his New York City blues by singing softly, gently picking the strings of his guitar. Jo then joins him, creating a deeper sadness in the mind and soul. The mood is lifted with drums and Keith pours his pain through heavy guitar strumming while pushing his voice to the very limit, releasing his last drop of sorrow or perhaps a spark of hope. The crowd then chants "encore!" The Shivers provide an upbeat tempo of a Bruce Springsteen jam. But if you enjoy the chilling sensation of Ireland's Damien Rice, then you'll surely descend into New York City's (The) Shivers.
