Our older people that have managed to stay alive here are also taking up a large portion of the towns' monies to keep them alive and well because of the poor air and other living conditions that have given them inoperable conditions. So now we have no entertainment and poor infrastructure leading to children that have nothing more to do than get pregnant. Then we end up with teen parents that never finish school, can never leave, and end up on some kind of drugs. Starting the cycle over again.

Our children are loosing their parents to diseases like black lung or tragedies like collapsed tunnels. The children then have to grow up with only one parent, making their lives much harder and causing them to be rebellious. Our roads and infrastructure is in horrible condition, and most of the money that these towns could be using to bring entertainment and security to our area is going into maintaining highways and roads destroyed by trucks.

I think people in this area (wise county) need to grow up and take a look at the big picture. Yes: coal mining is providing many jobs in this area, but not all of them. Coal mining is also scaring away businesses from outside that may want to invest in our county. The mining is making our beautiful mountains disappear and what is left looks ugly and dirty. Who wants to move in here and live in what looks like filth?
-
You want to know why there is no other jobs besides in this area? Its because the local gov't is to stupid to bring any in. Also coal is cover up for the real income of wise county which is drugs. Oh they want tourism here? How many out of state cars come through here anyway in days time? Most are from KY and TN. The local gov't is just plain stupid and crooked as hell. They dont care about us that live here just themselves and filling their own pockets.

Funny how you're worrying about southwest Virginia when northern Virginia has more pollution. As far as environmental degradation; well, I won't even get on that. Worry about northern Virginia; it needs more help.
-
why dont you and your hippy friends just and jump in a lake and leave the people of southwest virginia along, that power plant is jobs to this community and with the way the economy is now, we need all the jobs we can get.
-
i am a coal miner in southwest virginia to be exact russell county. 1) the aep power plant you showed was not in wise county it was in russell county SO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. AEP is in russell county. dominion power is in wise county.

I hate that so much wealth comes from my mountains and we hardly benefit from it! The northern virginia population is getting most of the benefits and we get black lung, severed limbs from rock falls, pollution, mountain top removal and most importantly loss of jobs when a tree hugger tries to decide what is right for me. Well you will have my respect when you pick up a mining light and a life tag and go down into one of the holes! don't tell me what is right and what is righteous!
Please just quit coming down here starting a bunch stuff we live here this is our country. these are the best means of income in this area you are trying to destroy our jobs. SO LEAVE SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA ALONE and by the way the plant has its final permits they are building it no matter what you say or think!!!!!!

We realized the mistake about location soon after publishing the video, and we posted it as a correction on the website. As for "destroying jobs" that, I think, is never anyone's intention. It's part of the delicate issue here. In an ideal situation (which of course we should strive hard for) we could strike a balance between curtailing the environmental degradation/pollution caused by coal mining and burning and maintaining a healthy economy with jobs. Thank you for your comment.

got a great idea why dont you just stay in northern va where you belong, and try to get all the folks up there to turn off all the power usage that way the plant would not be needed but then you couldnt make stupid videos for you tube. the solution is simple but i guess freezing in the dark is not the solution you want.

In actuality, that is part of our goal. Our mission is to make these videos to raise awareness and help citizens of northern Virginia understand the importance of energy efficiency and energy efficient technology and the role that it plays in all of this. Thank you for your comment.

Hey....so called 'smart' ppl of VT that posted this video, I live here. I would just like to say that, that house that the buildup was removed from wasn't 100% from the power plant. There is a railway that runs by those houses near the Carbo plant and also a high traffic coal truck road. Most of the buildup seen on that house was from coal dust and diesel emissions. Next time, don't target the energy companies who invest millions in scrubbers to remove this waste from the air.

Intelcrazy--
I am sorry that you took our investigation to be a "target" on the energy, when, in reality, it is meant to be a comprehensive look at the way that we extract, process, transport, and use our energy source: coal, here in VA. We are aware that the dust comes from trucks--we saw this with our eyes. Please understand that it is all a comprehensive part of the energy picture. To ignore these parts would make the project less relevant. I hope that you keep watching! Take care
