Leslie Garrett sings "The Sun Whose Rays" aka "The Moon and I" from Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado

The sun, whose rays
Are all ablaze
With ever-living glory,
Does not deny
His majesty —
He scorns to tell a story!
He don't exclaim,
"I blush for shame,
So kindly be indulgent."
But, fierce and bold,
In fiery gold,
He glories all effulgent!
I mean to rule the earth,
As he the sky —
We really know our worth,
The sun and I!
I mean to rule the earth,
As he the sky —
We really know our worth,
The sun and I!
Observe his flame,
That placid dame,
The moon's Celestial Highness;
There's not a trace
Upon her face
Of diffidence or shyness:
She borrows light
That, through the night,
Mankind may all acclaim her!
And, truth to tell,
She lights up well,
So I, for one, don't blame her!
Ah, pray make no mistake,
We are not shy;
We're very wide awake,
The moon and I!
Ah, pray make no mistake,
We are not shy;
We're very wide awake,
The moon and I!

  • Best version of this song! How can she do this SITTING DOWN?? I I went out with a girl called Lesley Garrett when i was 15...pity it was not this one! One does a good song, the other a good snog! Anyway..thanks to both of you.

  • @MrPaulb1001 thank you for making me feel less alone.

  • @MrCuddlyable3 thank you for this information. it's nice to know there are nice people who will take the time to respond.

  • @TheDavidphilip I have an unpleasant memory of a Kenny Baker "stealing" this song from Yum-Yum in a 1936 film and what is worse, doing it with an American accent.

  • i love this song. my father was a lifelong G&S fan and introduced us very early to thier work, I have never quite understood what this song is about though. Could anyone enlighten me?

  • @TheDavidphilip I've had the same thought, a guy could sing this song.

  • i hate to sound like an idiot, but are there any recordings of this song sung by a man, in baritone or bass? just curious about what it would sound like. please don't hate me for being poorly educated...
