In this third of our three videos we are preparing a guitar to take an Earvana Retrofit Nut.
The existing nut has already been removed - see our other video on nut removal In part one of this series the base part has been fitted
In part two we showed the fitting of the top piece and trimming it to size
Now in this instalment we will be cutting the nut slots, and cutting the strings to depth
Not too many tools are required - in this video we use the following:
A precision screwdriver "00" size
Some small drill bits -1.25mm (0.050" / 50 thou) - available from an engineering shop
An X-acto or craft knife.
Some specialist nut files - these are possibly the most specialist tools that we use in this whole process. Some folks make do with needle files , but these give a much better and much easier job
A fine saw to cut the grooves to start with - again ours came from www.stewmac.com , but hobby and model making shops may have them too
Some wet n dry paper would be good too for smoothing the edges of the top pice when its all filed to size
the strings look like their amazingly close to the frets, 0.0015 inch and theres no buzz?
say i dont have my old nut, how to i decide where to put the grooves for the external strings? (e1 and e6 when standard) also, what gauge strings did you use?
