The Big Deal About Big Data - a perspective from IBM Research
Kevin Nowka, Director of IBM Research

So what is the big deal about Big Data? Of course, the answer is that it's big -- 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are generated every day from social media, sensors, and other sources. Companies are struggling to find ways to make sense of and derive insight from this torrent of information.

The IT industry is responding by developing computational accelerators and sophisticated analytics algorithms to filter and extract value from all of this data. IBM alone has helped hundreds of clients in many industries harness the power of big data. By analyzing massive volumes and varieties of constantly changing data, organizations can uncover threats and opportunities, build efficiencies, and make more informed decisions. In this talk, Kevin Nowka will discuss use cases for Big Data and describe how emerging technologies are providing a life preserver for enterprises caught in the sea of Big Data.

Dr. Kevin Nowka is the director of IBM Research -- Austin, one of IBM's 12 global research laboratories. He leads a team of scientists and engineers working on power-efficient systems and datacenters, system modeling, workload-optimized computing systems, high-speed and power-efficient VLSI circuits, productivity enhancing design automation tools, and the measurement and modeling of the complex interactions between the design and the manufacture of integrated circuits.

Dr. Nowka received a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1995. He has more than 70 issued patents and has published over 70 technical papers on high-performance and low-power circuits, processor design, and technology issues. He is an IBM Research Master Inventor and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology.
