Sounds to me almost like the rims are spinning inside the tires, you might need to CA the tires to the rims.

That looks like a Tamiya Hornet pinion.
Is that the standard motor? I tried this with the original 'Box I had in the eighties (as I had a Hornet as well) and it could barely shift it's own weight.
