I don't see how it's space saving. You need the housing space for the motorized top compartment, and you have to keep the space below open, to allow for the "drop". Seems like twice the amount of space is used.

Everybody can complain, but just look up in your house...lots of space up there.
The main room people hang in in the evening should have a low ceiling...around six inches higher than the tallest tenant. Then when you heat the room, well you get the idea. Savings.

It saves NO more space than a normal cabinet.
instead of the doors coming OUT, the shelves go DOWN, thus the same amount of space is needed..... in the same room.

@adachan1 And that's a 70 year old lady in the video? Damn.

This concept was in the USA in the 30's or 40's (not sure), I have seen this type kitchen gadgerty in old newsreels. It seems like it fell from favor since Americans like big things.
I'm pretty sure that's a cabinet made for drying out dishes, not just an ordinary cabinet.

@chinesekid05 It is. In this house its used to offset the shortness as well :)

that is cool but seems unnecessary
are people actually so lazy they would want a powered cabinet rather than opening a cupboard door?

@Weslo2 have you seen the average height of 70 year old ladies in Japan? I think it's not a question of being lazy at all, but rather a way to use the entire height of the wall...
