I don't understand why the FeBr3 doesn't take an electron from the benzene instead. I would have thought it would have been easier for it to take an electron from that pi bond.

an amazing explination. last year in orgo i just memorized the bromine bonding with the benzene ring and the hydrogen bromide forming, but this is much more interesting to see why that reaction actually happens
