Cup Mile when he was only half the horse he had been throughout the season. The signs were there in the Moulin that he was coming to the end of his tether and had had enough for the season, but by that stage Aidan and John were so confident in his ability they thought he'd win the Mile even if he was over the top (not to mention the added breeding incentive of a BC winner) And of course he would have won but for an awful trip and ride by Kinane.
Absolute wonder horse. Better than the Brigadier.

What he did in the Criterium was frightening. It says everything about Hawk Wing's reputation in Tipperary that The Rock started 9/1 for the 2000 Guineas. Incredible to think that even after that most people STILL said Hawk Wing was the superior horse. 9/1 was/is still insane to think about given his 2yo campaign, when he had plenty of races and in only one did he flop (Coventry at Royal Ascot) - he was beaten fair & square in another. But look what he went on to achieve. Pity he lost a Breeders

@MrConnolly25 Rock of Gibralter had better form over a mile because he was campaigned over this trip and it was his speciality. Sea the Stars was a lot more verstile, so campaigned over different distances, but if he'd been targeted at the top mile races exclusively, he could have been a great miler...who knows? However, Rock of Gibralter was a fantastic miler.
