the guy who play Reverend smith is an incredible actor. To play a person with that sort of ailment it takes great skill. I personally felt he was worthy of an oscar for his performances as Reverend Smith

There's another scene with Reverend Smith I enjoyed. It happens at the tents where people with smallpox are being treated. A recovered patient asks the Reverend to say a few words from the Bible to lift his spirits. Smith stumbles over a couple of verses then says, "I no longer feel the hand of God upon me." Then he just walks away.

This was the best episode of season one. It had really funny scenes, amazing dailogue scenes with good characterisation and then this one which makes you cry

"Mr. Swearengen's saloon has a new piano." Poor guy.
This is still the greatest television series ever made.

This scene (and other parts of the Reverend's storyline) was the only time I've teared up at a TV show or movie. His storyline is truly heartbreaking

This scene pretty much sums up the human condition-we don't know why we're here, and good people suffer inordinately, etc. We're all stumbling around in the dark with death at the end, and human companionship is one of the few things that make this existence bearable . Fucking brilliant writing and acting.
a powerful scene, thanking for posting this atarax12

No problem! I'm glad to see others are as much moved by this scene as I am.
