The 1st Half of the "Large School" 5A Texas Football Championship played in the Astrodome on December 22, 1990. This showdown featured a meeting between DW Rutledge (Judson) and Dennis Parker (Marshall). They were Defensive and Offensive Coordinators respectively at Judson when the Rockets beat Midland Lee for their first title in 1983, and in the three (3) seasons preceding that they commuted together from Seguin each day. Both assumed their respective Head Coach positions shortly after that.

Given all the gumby and high-top fades evident, I wanted to give a real New Jack kind of music feel to the video by using the beat to Bel Biv Devoe's "Poison"---the Rockets had a somewhat toxic First Half and Coach Parker wasn't too thrilled by a call in favor of Judson at the 1/2-yard line----but it's probably protected by copyright. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the frenzied beat that accompanies the frenzied activity on the field.

  • I was there as a freshman in Marshall. That was the best football game experience I have ever been around. The fact that out of a town of 24000 people, Marshall had about 10000 in the stands. Once a Maverick alwYs a Maverick. No wonder Aldine was afraid to play the Mavs. Go MAVS!
