This short clip demonstrates two vintage neon nixie tubes being run as a working clock from one 14 pin PIC.

5 data lines gives 5 x 4 = 20 possible outputs which are used to drive the ten digits in each tube.

In addition, two blue/red dual LEDs illuminate the bases of the glass tubes.

  • what is charlieplexing ? :)

  • @kosec321 charlieplexing is a variation of multiplexing that takes advantage of the input mode on microcontroller pins. Since the input mode is high impedance it effectively removes that pin from the circuit. You can build a mesh of LEDs between the available pins and then address LEDs by setting one pin to high, one to low, and the rest to input. It's really pretty clever.
