  • This is amazing ! I don't remember that this game was released on the Atari 8-bits back then... I would have had it for sure :)

Remember that the original arcade game used the much more powerful and speedy 68000 processor. Very well programmed to get this speed of the game on a 6502 at 1,79 Mhz. Where can I find this game for download ? (I still have a 130XE and 800 here)...

  • You can find a downloadable demo on google with SPACE HARRIER ATARI PROJECT

  • Who ever made this game for the atari, what can i say?BRAVO isn't enough! To have such Fast scrolling, huge sprites, speech samples and gameplay so close to the coin op is a major achievement.I still have my 130XE (with tape) and i really didn't know the machine was so capable.Well done!

  • This once again proves that most software companies don't bother exploring the possibilities of hardware they code for. Back in the day systems like Atari ST, C64 and Amstrade CPC got some appalling ports of Space Harrier, and Atari 8-bit didn't even get one, since it was considered to be unable to handle it. Now thanks to a humble enthusiast we see that not only was Atari able to handle such an advanced game, it could do it much closer to the arcade original than all those other platforms.

  • I'd love to hear a nice long track of just the music from this Atari version - sounds great :D

  • Dunno why but this makes me think it's a clone

  • The atari 800 could do much more than it's peers, i.e. c64 / spectrum / amstrad. a lot of the games were smooth like space harrier some even had 3d and full filled polygon graphics, the computer was way ahead of its time. Do a search on here and you'll find some amazing 3d games.

  • @darkfalzx : " it could do it much closer to the arcade original than all those other platforms. "

lol, what a bullshit. thia game needs 320k something ram. Lets see how it would look like using original HW specs and not years of development time but weeks.

  • Again a prove in which I already believed for long time that the atari xl/xe can do much more than people thought. I started coding again on the xl and I hope I can release a nice piece of software in the future too. By the way, are there any Dutch Atari xl users here?

  • Holy shit this actually rivals the sms version in a lot of respects, what computer was this on exactly?

  • wow that is a pretty good port

  • looks pretty bad but it's cool to hear space harrier in atari 8bit sound

  • Wow, this isn't bad at all - just might be the best version for 8-bit western computers.

  • The synthesized voice doesn't stop the game, the objects don't have blank borders around them (appear to be sprites and not cleverly laid out tiles like the Master System version).

SMS wins in the color department , the flicker is very noticeable in the video converison.
