BATU Caves is synonymous with Thaipusam, one of the major festivals celebrated by the Hindus to honour Lord Muruga.

On the eve of the Thaipusam festival, a silver chariot makes its way from the Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Jalan Tun HS Lee in Kuala Lumpur to the Batu Caves temple before making its way back again the following day after the festival. The silver chariot is made entirely of gold and within it is a statue of Lord Muruga.

The over 30km journey is accompanied by devotees in the thousands, walking barefeet, young and old as they make their way to the temple in the annual pilgrimage.
