It actually started off with a US design Allison engine but suffered the same high altitude performance limitations of other Allison engined types until the Rolls Royce Merlin was installed.

It's funny how the Cobra was a Brit-American lovechild because it had a British chassis and an American engine, this plane is an exact opposite, American chassis mixed with a British Rolls Royce engine... go figure....

Your point? Even if it was, that "British engine" is nothing more than an over sized boat anchor without that AMERICAN MADE air frame. Same goes for the air frame without the engine. See it for what it is (an amazing machine), not where it was made.
