March 2010

No other industry has benefited more from globalisation than the shipping industry. Yet in the wake of the recession, ship owners, shipyards and crews are all finding themselves struggling to survive.
We have been stuck here with no food and no gasoline. We cannot send money to our families." Francis is a sailor from Ghana. For months, he has been stranded on a rusty tanker in the port of Las Palmas. When the owners went bankrupt, the crew was left hanging with no means of getting home. Situations like these are common in ports all over the world. A ship usually has several owners; banks, pension funds and private individuals, and everyone washes their hands of it.

  • any captain who would abandon his ship and crew should be shot. period.

  • That's kick ass reporting! The real truth that main stream media just don't seem to see.

5 stars for real reality. Sad though.

  • what the fuck is wrong with you stupid bastards this shit really pisses me off when they say this. Africa is not a fuck country in the documentary the idiot of a woman who say the people are from Africa but then says the other are from Ukraine, i didn't hear her say they are from Europe. fucking idiot

  • whose voice in narration

  • Tough shit. Tough shit for everyone. Nobody plays a violin for my sad story. Iz it coz Iz white?

  • why isn't there a three month time limit, that if the owner abandons the ship and the joint owners dont make good the debt, then the ship is sold for the minimum needed to pay the wages of the crew and any air fares. this would get an easy buyer because the price would be so low, the people who run away will keep away and the matter will be finished. this wont affect the trade of people who still want to trade.

    ???

still, once the ship is for sale some owner will probably materialise...

  • sad day for shipping

  • Well yeah, a change in the economy affects everything, especially shipping.

  • I understand what your saying but i was giving an example on how money"disapears" and people start loosing their jobs, it wasnt a straight reference to this video. which is really good by the way =) but sad =(

  • Sad thing for those guys. I feel badly for them. But I wonder about the search for the captain. If they find him, then what? He's gone bankrupt so how will a broke man with no money give out money? He's lost his ship and investment. Everyone loses.

  • Saying shipping benefits from globalization isn't true. They can't benefit if businesses can't benefit.
