People who lived on Salt Spring Island five years ago will remember a Saturday march in mid-March followed by a rally in Centennial Park. This was in solidarity with people from all around the world protesting the plans for an attack on Iraq by the US and some of its allies. We came out 1000 strong for the march around Ganges. There were banners, drums, chanting and just plain marching. At the end of the march we assembled in the park and were inspired by guest speakers and music. We were glad that Canada opted out at the last minute.

This coming Saturday, March 15, at 10:30 in the morning, the SSI Coalition of Concerned Citizens will again hold a rally that will emphasize what Canada's peaceful role in the world should be. Speakers taking part include Christine Hunt, Andrew Lewis, Marion Pape, Briony Penn, Sheila Reid and Julian West. Between speeches we also will be treated to music by Alan Moberg, Phil Vernon, Susan Cogan, Sue Newman and the Raging Grannies. Two local poets, Murray Reiss and Cherie Geauvreau, will each do a short reading. In addition we will have a snippit of theatre by some 6- and 7-year olds under the direction of Sue Newman and a brief presentation by some high school students. Terri Bibby will have her woven Hiroshima banners on display.

Collaborating groups include Peace Works and the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, as well as many individuals.

  • Don't pretend you could stand around free without the brave men and women of the United States of America's armed forces, the character of our people, and the principles we stand for.

If Al-qaeda came to Salt Spring island they would behead you all in terrifically horrible ways that you couldn't understand. They'd RPG that douche with the guitar, and no siren would go off. Try living in the real world, instead of the fantasy land you've created in our shadow.

  • Someday, an Islamic militant with 4 pounds of anthraw will kill over 30,000 people. He can enter the USA thru one of the many tunnels from Mexico.

Why would I say it? Kuwait professor recommends it!

  • Would you be willing to post just the Julian West portion of the video?
