Come out for free family fun with a conscience to the third annual Poverty Olympics on February 7, 2010 at the Japanese Language School (487 Alexander St., Vancouver, Canada) from 1 - 3 pm. Watch the Games (Welfare Hurdles, Skating around Poverty, and more), cheer the Mascots (Itchy the Bedbug, Creepy the Cockroach and Chewy the Rat), boo the Bad Guys (Mr. Bid and Mr. Con Dough), sing along with the Poverty Anthem, eat cake and be merry!

  • why don't they just get a job? Economic losers!

  • The concern over poverty is based on a fear that people are not receiving basic necessities of life. Concern over inequality has more to do with fairness in how the rewards and disparities in society are justly distributed.

  • Some elements that work towards reducing poverty in Canada include Canada's strong economic growth, government transfers to persons of $145 billion per annum as of 2006[3], universal medical and public education systems, a progressive income tax system, and minimum wage laws in each of the provinces and territories of Canada.

  • It is hard to believe one would think a person would chose to live in poverty... This is not an act of laziness. Are we living in the 1600's with the Elizabeth Poor Laws?? Wake up and smell the coffee.

  • why don't they just get a jobworking with the olypics. you can't compare these people to olypians considering olypians work hard and bums don't do anything.

  • It's easy to blame everyone else for being poor. But really who's fault is it?

  • well done.

  • Olympic games are fine and good but only if the resources to keep them are not frivolously wasted.

Convert the olympic venues to affordable housing and communities with space for people of all economic levels to live equally alongside each other.

Don't let the olympic parade trample the hopes, jobs, dreams, and dignity, of the people trying to have a decent life in the same venue.

  • Why are so many homeless in Vancouver? There are many towns in B.C. where apartment buildings have shuttere, due to high vacancy? It doesn't make sense to live in Vancouver if you lose your job - get out before you become penniless - move to where the jobs are. If a family member gets hooked on drugs, pay $ to send them to a private Rehab. clinic in the States - don't let your loved one be stuck in a waiting list for MSP - funded rehab. program (which happens to be out of town.)

  • Very well done! What are we teaching our children? Get a corporate sponsor, Let them use you to make a lot of money & call it National pride. When you watch tv pretend you don't see the stories about poverty in our country and others, but cheer on these athletic role models who will one day make a lot of money as professional athletes and then feed it all back into the great corporate machine. I feel deeply ashamed that the media can fool the masses into thinking this is honourable.
