Let me open by saying that I will not take the normal tone of the democrat: Republicans are stupid, end of story. This attitude, too often owned by democrats is ignorant and helps no one. The purpose of this essay is instead to give republicans the perspective that democrats have toward republican policies. Hopefully, if you are a republican reading this essay, upon finishing it, you will be educated on the problems of republican policies and democratic misconceptions toward republican policy. I hope that you will express any objections you have to the ideas expressed in this essay, so that I may be educated by your point of view.
The republican strategy for defense is offense, which is a practice that has been implemented many times in history and failed. Sun Tzu wrote in The Art of War, There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare. Sun Tzu understood over 1000 years ago that war is not profitable and that it hurts the citizens of a nation. In The Art of War he plainly states that war will drain the wealth and life of commoners and therefore it is bad for a nation. Sun Tzu said, to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the supreme of excellence. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence. The Republican Party however, would rather fight than talk.
The 2008 republican platform says, summed up America's strategy for achieving that end in a timeless slogan: Peace through strength an enduring peace, based on freedom and the will to defend it. Currently, republicans hold the belief that war is beneficial to America and its national security. War is in no way beneficial to the United States or any other nation. Troops cost money. Weapons cost money. Supply lines cost money. Technological research cost money. Intelligence gathering costs money. War costs money. War kills our children. War ruins international perception of the United States. War is plainly put, bad. The only reason that we should go to war is to defend ourselves from an enemy who greatly threatens our lives.
We are not an empire. We dont hold colonies in distant lands. We are a sovereign nation. We should not spend our money on pointless wars. The current conflict in Iraq is only weakening our military strength so that when another country attacks us, we will be unable to defend ourselves. The current argument for the war in Afghanistan is that if we do not secure it, terrorists will have an area to train and organize. The truth is that terrorist can live and thrive without a base of operation. The 9/11 attackers learned to fly planes right here in the U.S.
America does not need to aggress. America instead must build up its defense at home. We must stop tapping the phones of citizens and instead invest in foreign intelligence. We must concentrate our efforts on diplomacy and not imperialism. At the end of the Clinton administration, North Korea was willing to end its nuclear program and withdraw forces from its southern border. George Bush didnt want to hold up Americas end of the bargain made by Bill Clinton though. So now North Korea has long range missile capability. Diplomacy in place of aggression is the only path to victory. The republican method of shoot first, only puts us in jeopardy.
