Indie folk duo the Civil Wars were the recent guests for an installment of The Recording Academy's 5 Questions With... series. Following the interview, the duo performed an intimate set featuring songs from their debut full-length album, Barton Hollow, including "Poison & Wine" and the title track, and a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."

"We got the song to iTunes literally within seconds of the episode airing," said guitarist/vocalist John Paul White on the placement of "Poison & Wine" in an episode of "Grey's Anatomy." "When people heard it on the show, they had no idea who we were, so they would just Google [the lyrics] 'I don't love you, but I always will,' [and] they eventually found us. This is the beauty of the information age. That's how we got a conversation started."

After meeting at a songwriting workshop in Nashville in 2008, Alabama native White and California native Joy Williams formed the Civil Wars. They played their first live performance as a duo at the French Quarter Cafe in Nashville, and their second at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, Ga., subsequently releasing a digital album, Live At Eddie's Attic, in 2009. In 2010 the duo was featured as one of Paste magazine's Best of What's Next. In February the duo released Barton Hollow, including the single "Poison & Wine," which peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard 200. On May 10 the Civil Wars performed at The Recording Academy Nashville Chapter's 13th Annual GRAMMY Block Party And Membership Celebration. The duo is currently on tour throughout the United States.

  • Love you Joy Williams! can't believe how much you have grown! I remember you as senior at Valley. God has truly molded your life. You had a incredible voice back in the day and you are still just as incredible. your life is a testimony!

  • right in the beginning of the song there was an add on the side and it was of the muppets and they were drumming and it was to the beat of this song and I couldn't stop laughing... Love this song

  • breathtaking!

  • Musical soulmates!

  • Even God took the time to sit down and listen to this heavenly sound...

  • Did Youtube do away with the dislike button for good?

  • @CalebsCoasters I'm aware. They're both married, to other people. I was just commenting on how they connect when they look at each other while singing. Legitimate chemistry/connection is something that doesn't happen very much in music anymore :)

  • @mmelodiee Joy's Married

  • I swear he looks like Johnny Depp in PoC

  • The volume is so low that I can't make out the words and only get the lower register of the piano, and the rest sounds far away. Are they actually articulating the words, or is something wrong with my speakers? They do blend well together, however.
