Once again the TCS crew run a brand new camcorder through a rigorous field test. This time, the Canon XA10 gets tested on an ice climbing expedition led by Ian Greant. Check out how the XA10 performed, and how it compares to its big brother, the XF 100.

Special thanks to Ian Greant, Stephen Lemmer, and Sean Chamberlain

  • You seem to have next to nothing as far as 'noise' goes, what sort of settings did you use to avoid that or was some of it cleaned up in post processing?

  • @g2theb It was a bright day, I wouldn't expect much image noise. As this was a pre-production camera, we used the default settings. There was no grading on the images.

  • Downloading files from this camera seem take forever. When downloading from the internal memory or the disks to a Mac G4 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro, should there a problem with the amount of time it takes, like hours. Using the USB to download take twice the amount of time actually shot. What are we doing wrong?

  • @pinebarranch Final Cut Pro cannot natively work with the files from the XA-10, so it takes a long time to convert the files to ProRes. Final Cut X is much faster, however it will not run on an old G4 machine. You may just have to wait it out.

  • @TheCameraStoreTV I guess i've not tried it outdoors in the day yet. Have you filmed it much in low light - especially indoors (My house is full of energy saving light bulbs), and if so how have you found the noise, i've tried turning the gain down and adjusting the aperture but it's still quite grainy! Thanks

  • @SapphireTruss 24MBPS, much higher than YouTube can display.

  • @CHproduction94 Both have the same low light ability, however, if you use noise reduction software, the XF100 cleans up nicer due to its better codec.

  • Hey!

I wonder if there is any difference in low-light quality between the xa10 and the xf100?

    thx :)

  • @TheCameraStoreTV What Mbps did you record this in?

  • @MrTibbsLive That's an Audio Technica AT875. Great short shotgun. It's selling for $320 CDN.
