This year, thousands of Michigan families are losing their jobs with the Big Three automakers and their suppliers. On Tuesday alone, Pontiac Assembly Center, the last assembly line in the scrappy capital seat of Oakland County, built its last truck. It is one of seven factories that General Motors expects to close in Michigan by late next year. Auto workers reflect on the end of an era on 9.29.09.

  • I almost quit the second day I worked there, but toughed it out. Spent 30.5 yrs there and now enjoy a comfy retiremnet...so far. I have lost some of the benefits I retired with which is VERY frustrating. Although I rarely had to rely on a union rep for anything, I was glad they were there. However, it seems now they have turned their backs on retirees. It seems that unions are now are their way out too...along with these great assembly centers...sad.

  • Hate to see it die. I retired from there in 2004 after 42 years with GM. Lots of people being hurt. I see where it was torn down a couple months ago. Lots of memories there. I saw soooo much money wasted by GM while I worked there. So much that had nothing to do with the UAW.

I am sure happy I made it to retirement but have no idea what most of those people are going to do. They are stuck with no job and homes that are worthless, mine has been on the market for over 4 years.

  • I thought the UAW made it possible for all these people to have jobs? How could this happen? Oh yeah, the plants were not profitable, so bye bye jobs. Sad that demands of give and take were so much to ask of the UAW that they would rather have no jobs than a good paying job with reasonable benefits. Change with the times or get left behind. Sorry for these people. It was all they knew. Unions like the UAW had there place, but that was long ago.

  • no one said, life is fair...how true that is.

  • awww my first car is a pontiac...

  • i feel like knife went through mee.

  • I am infuriated! WHy . . . does it hurt so much?

  • I am infuriated!

  • This just makes me sad! Its the reason why I had to leave my home state of Michigan!

  • God bless their families... This is horrible
