Quinn the Eskimo was a coke-dealer Bob Dylan knew. Once you understand that, everything in the song makes perfect sense. Now he says it's based on a nursery rhyme or Anthony Quinn's role in "Savage Innocents". He's also a guy who did a lot of hard drugs for about 30 years after he got in a really bad motorcycle accident. Apparently admitting an easy listening or adult contemporary song you wrote is based off a crippling addiction you had at the time makes it hard to play it during drive time.
