This would be the final film with the original cast members of the Star Trek franchise. With this film it would also see the return of Nicholas Meyer who had directed Star Trek II. Like that film he hired a young composer in James Horner, and with this movie he would do the same with Cliff Eidelman. This was the composers big shot, at breaking into Hollywood, and he certainly didn't mess this up. He created what is easily the darkest of all the Star Trek scores. Inspired by Mars, The Bringer of War, and The Firebird this score is unlike any other from the Trek universe.

This opening like the Goldsmith opening title doesn't use Alexander Courage's fanfare however it would be used towards the end of the score. The klingon theme is a very sinister approach and is something very different than what most people are used to hearing even for creatures such as Klingons. It's an effective piece which represents them well as always lurking, always ready to strike.

This was, and unfortunately still Cliff Eidelman's biggest score to date. He would never again be able to land such a large project. He is one of Hollywood's underused composers.

  • If you guys want to hear one of the main inspirations for this piece, look up "Mars: The Bringer of War" by Gustav Holst. I find making allusions to his music very appropriate for the subject matter of of this film, and how it starts with Praxis exploding.

  • why didn't they keep the theme from tmp and final frontier?

  • The movie was good, but if I had directed the movie, I would cut the Shakespeare lines from the movie.......that' just my opinion.

  • shorty - True.

  • @englanddg Actually that wasnt unique to 6. Pretty much all the movies were an allegory to current events. 4 was obvious with the whole environmental message, but the others were more subtle.

  • only nixon can go to china ;)

  • What made this movie the best, was it's promptness to the the political coinsurance at the time.

  • This is Brigadier Kerla, speaking for the High Command. There has been an incident on Praxis. However everything is under control. We have no need for assistance. Obey treaty stipulations and remain outside the Neutral Zone. This transmission ends now.

  • @wrlord i meant the score of course...geez.....why you reply to something I said a year ago!

  • @StuartTheGamerNerd What songs? There were no songs in this movie.
