@boulderdsvo Yeah, no.
The SE5a and SPADs used Hispano-Suiza v8s, which are vee engines. The HS8 has a full throttle, which you seem to be confusing with rotary engines. Early rotary engines had blipmags, but later ones had throttles. Waiting too long between blips was more likely to cause the engine to explode than not do anything due to excessive fuel buildup.

The SPAD XIII is by far my favorite WWi single seat fighter. This was true even before I knew Ed Rickenbacker, who helped me in painting Frank Lukes SPAD in 1/28th.

I'd be afraid to swing the prop by hand. Give me a hucks starter any day!

Sa-Weet!
What is the Se5 pilot doing during the first start-up? His hand is outside the cockpit cranking on something.

@bigrustyukuleles In order to start the engine you need to crank the "starting magneto". On the Se5a, this magneto is placed just outside the cockpit. When the engine is running, the two "classic" magnetos are taking over.

Are these replicas or the readl deal?

@LanciaTurbo This Spad is the world's unique airworthy original Spad XIII. It was built in 1918 by the Kellner company near Paris.
The Se5a is a replica built in the 1990s in England and completed by Memorial Flight a few years ago.
